Re: Top 20 searches for documentation

One other advantage to knowing this is that it would help in coordinating priorities for documentation construction and maintenance. I've been amazed lately at all the great stuff going on with this list about producing and refining documentation. But like the development of Drupal core and contributed modules, there becomes a point where too much documentation can become difficult to maintain. Knowing what documentation is most requested and gets used the most would help to prioritize updates; for instance, the top 20 (or some other number) list could be part of a *must do* update list associated with any new Drupal release candidate before the official release. Kieran Lal wrote: Hi, I don't have time to do it right now, but it would be good if someone could come up with a list of the top twenty things they believe people want in documentation. We should then have a script to run the searches to see how well the documentation shows up in the answers. The documentation may be there, but people can't find it. Cheers, Kieran

At the end of the day, we still need web-based representation of docs, although I presume the plan would be to export from DocBook. > > Did we made any progress? I can tell you right now, that doc efforts WILL slow. *Someone* needs to go out and investigate all the different options. We had a couple of suggestions, but nobody actually went out and tried them. I'm not going to put out any arguments against offline formats like DocBook -- it's a good idea if someone runs with it. I know *I* don't have time to do the necessary research. I also know that offline documentation is a mode switch -- I can easily spend a few minutes editing something web-based, but starting up a doc writing package (potentially with a CVS update/checkout somewhere along the way) will take much more time, and I will have to devote larger chunks of time to actually doing documentation. So, there's my 2¢ for now. We've got a busy week (weeks?) ahead. Roland and Richard continue to do Documentation Thursdays. We'll help with any efforts, but won't be leading the charge on any DocBook stuff. -- Boris Mann http://www.bryght.com

I created the forum. Go ahead and kick it off with the cardsorting experiment. I, for one, am interested in the outcome. -- Dries Buytaert :: http://www.buytaert.net/
