On the other hand, mailing lists are nice because:
- No need to check a website, your mail client does the leg work for
you.
- I have a local cache of discussions that I can easily search through.
- Everyone (who is on the ML, which really is everyone that matters)
gets notified of new messages.
- Doesn't get spammed at all (someone point me to spam they got on
_this_ ML).
The question about who to reply to is a non-issue. If someone posts
a question to the list, they better be ready to read the list for a
response. But if you find it appropriate, why not just CC the author
of a post? By posting everything to the list, everyone benefits.

yes, i would totally agree to use such a bulletin board like phpbb
(http://www.phpbb.com/ ) since i loathe mailing lists. here the
reasons for using a bulletin board:
o you don't need access to your mailaccount for everything going in
and out
o no need to think about like "where shall i reply to? to the
author, the mailing list or both?" i still don't know it. since i
can't see if the author is registered on the ml.
o by default all forums are public and easily accessible, which can
also be changed if needed for certain forums
o no need of the *very* unconfortable mailing list archives, which
cannot be searched and seperation into months is a mess.
o perfect organization into topics and threads and many
administrative easements
o attaching content which doesn't require redundant disk space in
everyone's mail box
o perfectly fine for people who are just interested into the
project and don't want to wrangle around with the complicated
mailing list concept.
o mostly resistant against spam. it can be instantly deleted by
empowered users.... or you require registration which is generally
a good idea
o it looks better and users can set up much information about them :)
o you still can be notified by email if you don't like the change
e-mail is an ancient concept, why not breaking with it!?
