Well, it's not the common != operator.  It's when applied to memory...
i.e. 'foo (is not same object in memory as) bar', not 'foo != bar'.

That makes it no less ludicrous a patent *sigh* but that's the world
yanks get to live in whilst us eurocrats are still trying to impose a
