Oh, I would be *so* disappointed if you'd switch to another VM... But I
certainly do get your point.
Otoh, you might be interested in 'std', a replacement for part of the
stdlib in Python, written by Holger Krekel and Armin Rigo (iirc), which
seems to provide a nice, consistent and 'pythonic' replacement of part
of the standard library.
Currently it hasn't been released (afaik), but the SVN repo can be found
here: http://codespeak.net/svn/std/trunk/src/std/
