Subject: concurrent download threads - msg#00026

List: os.solaris.pca

Date: Prev Next Index Thread: Prev Next Index

I just put a new development release of pca online, with this change:

* Add option for concurrent patch downloads (--threads=NUM)

It's a rather big change in code actually - I've finally integrated the patch by Chris Reece which he made available at:

http://www.sparsezone.com/pca/

It adds the functionality to download multiple patches from SunSolve in parallel. This can speedup downloads of big patch sets dramatically. You will need a perl with threading support compiled in (Solaris' /usr/bin/perl unfortunately doesn't have it). "pca --help" or "perl -V:useithreads" will tell you about threads support in your copy of perl.

Kudos to Chris, who has been supporting and developing the patch over a long time, and has been listening to every proposal I made to make the patch integrate smoothly.

Martin.

Re: Pca Applying unnecessary patch

Greg Matthews wrote: Martin Paul wrote: Whenever such patches are reported to me, I add a workaround into pca itself. I've done that for 111857/114176 now as well in the current pca development release. The problem shouldn't show up again. Are new releases announced to this list? Is there a standard Subject header for such announcements? New official releases are announced both to the pca-news and this list with a Subject like "[pca] New release: 20080311-01". I don't follow a fixed procedure in announcing development releases, but when it includes an important fix or a new feature I'll post about it to this list for discussion. A great way to get informed about new versions is pca's "update" option. Set it to "check" in your pca.conf file, and it will check for updates once per day (of course only when you run it). If you want to stay on the bleeding edge, you can set "pcaurl" to point at the development release to make it check for development instead of official releases. See "UPDATE PCA" in the docs. Hope this helps, Martin.

Re: Patch 125952-07

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm running U3 here; I've already opened a case with Sun and made them aware of the issue. Perhaps it will help. Mahalo! If the above mentioned patches don't show up as missing patches, they must be installed already. Try: pca -p 'Web Console' -l all and see if installed revision is equal to current revision (IR = CR). We had some discussion about these and other Web Console patches recently (Sun created different patches for Solaris 8/9/10, although the software is the same on each release of Solaris). They really created quite some mess here. Sun probably has a security issue here - if there is a security patch for Web Console 3.0.2 on Solaris 10 8/07, one can assume that the same problem exists in Web Console 3.0.2 on Solaris 10 11/06, but there is no way to fix this until Sun produces another patch. Pca Applying unnecessary patch

Hi ,    I applied a patch bundle to a Solaris 8 box and it included a patch for Solaris 9 . The box in question is part of a Sun cluster . It applied patch 114176-05 114176 -- < 05 --- 999 Sun Cluster 3.0: OPS Core Patch for Solaris 9 There is no mention of this patch in showrev -p and uname -a is -- > SunOS joebloggs 5.8 Generic_117350-38 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-880 If I place showrev.out/pkginfo.out/uname.out in a directory and run ./pca -H -f . This patch is generated in the report . Why ? When the patch was applied to the system it would not boot . Had to remove . Looking on Sunsolve it says there is a version of this patch for Solaris 8 -- > 111857 -- < 09 -S- 999 Sun Cluster 3.0: OPS Core Patch for Solaris 8 Must ask the questions . Why did the OS install a patch for Solaris 9 . How did pca decide this patch was needed Ray Cromwell EITO - Unix server team Global Technology mobile +353(0)87 2121925 phone +353(1)2037000 *  ray.cromwell@xxxxxxxxxxxx ****************************************************************************** The content of this e-mail may be confidential or legally privileged. How to build a patch dependencies list

Good Day everyone, This is my first post. I'm trying to find a way to build a patch dependencies list. For example I want to go to Kernel revision (Solaris 10) patch level 127111-10, and I want to make a list of all its depended patches using the patchdiag.xref, is this possible?  How I can use the pca a tool and make that list. I read the help for pca but didn't get find a way. I really appreciate the help.  Alex
