SUMMARY: dev/pts error

Thanks to Dan Astoorian and Casper Dik, who both pointed me to the
problem: /usr/lib/pt_chmod was set 755, on the suspect machine, while
it was 4111 on other (functioning) machines. In fact, it looks like
someone ran a chmod -R on /usr, or /usr/lib, setting everything to
the wrong permissions. Changed those perms back for pt_chmod and
that, at least, works now.

But, since I didn't do the install on this box in question (but I did
build the one that works), I think it's time for a complete wipe and
reinstall - and I get to track down whoever did hose the machine up
and administer the appropriate corrective action. 

I think I know exactly who did it, too. >:-)

Okay, I'm not making any headway on this, and it's in no FAQ or
knowledgebase that I can find. So ...

Trying to log some activity with 'script' - when any user but root
runs it, it fails with "/dev/pts/#: Permission denied" where # is the
device number, which differs from time to time.

Comparing this system with another, nearly identical, shows no
differences in /dev or /devices, or in the links between them, in
either ownerships, permissions, major or minor numbers, or anything
else I can find yet.

Any ideas?

Solaris 8, the 02/02 release, on 280R boxes, and really annoying.
