How to get non-Sun SCSI drive working on Sparc IPX?: msg#00316

Subject: How to get non-Sun SCSI drive working on Sparc IPX?

I'm trying to get a Fujitsu 4GB SCSI drive to work on a Sun IPX, but it didn't come with Solaris on it so there isn't a Sun boot label on it. This apparently causes the install to barf on the Sparc. What I'm wondering is how to get a valid boot label on the disk. Can it be done on another platform (ie i386-port), then moved over to sparc, or can I somehow use a working netbsd/sparc system to create a valid boot/disklabel (ie using 'dd')? The disklabel manpage mentions some platforms needing some bootstrap executables but it wasn't clear how to go about doing this. I do happen to have an old SunOS system available, so maybe something could be done via this?
