I think that is why others reported they weren't having problems with the function keys working. To my knowledge the "fn" key only changes the function keys like f1, f2, etc from controlling the hardware to software. So if F1 is decreasing the screen brightness (controlling hardware) you would then hold down the "fn" key and then it would allow the software to register that F1 was pressed.
