Constant "Checking for Updates" Window?

Howdy.  Running B54 here and trying to figure out why I see a
"Checking for Updates" window virtually all the time.  I have tried
reverting preferences back to default, just in case it's something I
did.  The task never seems to complete and seems to run virtually
randomly--but often.  Any ideas?
