Disruption (mostly) ended: msg#00009os.coyotos.devel
The machine migration is now complete. There was a brief window between 8pm and 9pm EST on Friday when messages sent to the lists may have been lost. See below. Machines: All state has migrated, and all interesting work is now being done by a new machine hosted at SoftLayer. The SoftLayer team, by the way, was *extremely* helpful, and I would recommend them if you are looking for dedicated hosting solutions. Only time will tell how stable their network is, but their customer support was absolutely superb. DNS: DNS updates will propagate over the next 24 hours. Depending on the status of your local DNS cache, you may see the update anywhere between 5 minutes from now and 24 hours from now. Except as noted below, the change should be invisible. Mailing lists: All mailing lists are now alive and well. If you do NOT receive this note, please get in touch with me. :-) Posts sent during the next 24 hours that arrive at the old machine will be forwarded to the new machine transparently. There was a brief window between 8pm and 9pm EST on Friday when messages sent to the lists may have been lost. See below about how to check the archives. If your note does not appear in the archive on the new site, it got clobbered in transit and needs to be resent. List Archives: Archives at the OLD machine are current up to the moment of cutover. They will not be updated further. Archives at the NEW machine are getting updated with new messages. At some point in the next 24 hours the updates will magically start being visible because your DNS system has started pointing you at the new website. You will know that you are looking at the new machine if you see a small "TEG" icon in your URL bar. If you urgently need to see a post that is sent late tonight or tomorrow, browse to the August archive page for your list. If you don't see the TEG icon and you don't see your message, replace the host name in the URL with 75.126.8.162. By midnight EST on Saturday this should no longer be necessary. Please do not bookmark or forward messages containing the numeric IP -- that number is volatile! Web Sites: The sites at the OLD machine are current up to the moment of cutover. They will not be updated further (and since I'm out of town this weekend, nothing interesting is happening anyway). Some time before midnight on Saturday EST, you will start seeing the "TEG" icon in the URL bar, and you'll know that you are looking at the NEW machine. That's where all future updates will happen. Rsync: Rsync access to the Coyotos trees is (very) temporarily unavailable. I'll deal with that when I get back in to town. Regards, shap |
