With 63 partition limit for IDE disks and 16 for SCSI's,
and with plenty of tools freely available to resize,
move, create etc. a media; why wipe-out a debian installation,
just to test another distro?

If you're concerned because of a "what kernel" when you install
then # apt-get install kernel-package , read the docs and build
and install/deinstall/test your own kernel images with ease,
to your hearts content.

Is it because you wipedout your installation?
Some versions in gentoo and debian had different dependencies.
Or, you have a defective media (cd).
