It's like this.  If you want the latest KDE/Gnome and all that, then
yes, it's bloated.  And that's what I use.  I have 1GB of memory, and a
fast cpu, I can deal with it.

But Linux will still run on much older hardware just fine.  Maybe not
the latest RH or Suse out of the box, but with a little tweaking it can
be done.  Just use a light-weight window manager (of the twm genre),
make sure no extra daemons are running, and use lightweight apps.  Make
X run at 8-bit color, and use an accelerated driver if one exists for
your vide hardware.  Most video hardware still in use, anything VLB or
better, will certainly have 2-D accelerations for moving windows around
and stuff without much bothering the cpu.

My first use of X was on a VAX/VMS workstation that was unable to put
out even 1 MIP.  It worked fine.  10 years ago, I was using a DEC
MIPS-bases workstation running at 33MHz with 32MB of memory.  Again, it
worked fine.  I'd typically run xclock, xeyes, 4 xterms, and later on
xmosaic.  What more do you need?  :)
