try looking into import and xwinfo (part of
Imagemagick yata un).

i have a cron'd script with these:

# this gets the id used by screen
windowid=`/usr/bin/X11/xwininfo -name screen -display localhost:0 | grep
xwininfo | awk '{ print $4}'`
# this captures the contents of the
/usr/bin/import -silent -display localhost:0 -window $windowid  ~/cms.gif

cms.gif is then displayed to a web page and updated every 18 sec.
