Dear Peter/Owen,
Thanks for your replies, I think I will start again, be more fun that
way....
I downloaded the Debian Net installer I don't needed everything, I'm
going to see where I get to.
I've got a good LAMP guide as well and I'm going to try to install
shorewall.
If you are quite early in the install process, it might be worth
starting over. Because sarge still uses a default 2.4 kernel
on the CD, and you might have installed a 2.6 kernel, the process
of getting the right modules for the initrd may have gone badly
wrong, particularly if you have a SATA disk. You might try
doing an installation booting using the 'linux26' or 'expert26'
command to boot the CD.
For sshd you probably want to ask apt-get to install openssh-server.
