Dear all,
You may remember me, possibly from last December time when I was setting
up an Apache 2 server.
It has generally been working fine, hosting a couple of sites, happily
using a2ensite to sort out virtual hosts etc. Only gone done when there
has been a power cut or a surge which has frozen my router.
Anyhow lastnight, I added the security repositories to sources.list
(which I know I should have done ages ago).
I then did apt-get update, the apt-get upgrade
All appeared fine until it started replacing packages, got to the kernel
and I apologise that I cannot remember everything. But in short it said
that I was attempting to replace the same kernel and the compile list
might be different, I kept be 100% sure.
Anyhow to cut it short it advised to reboot immediately once the
replacement process was complete.
This I did and now the machine will not boot up at all and the hard
drive light just stays on.
I connected my monitor and it turns out be a kernel panic message,
joy..... , as below:
VFS: cannot open root device "hda1" or unknown - block (0,0)
Please append a correct "root =" boot option
kernel panic : VFS: Unable to mount root ts on unknown-block (0,0)
I had a kernel panic a while back when installing Mandrake 10 or 10.1, I
merely reinstalled using 2.4 kernel instead of 2.6
I suppose if I have to re-install the base debian Sarge system it will
be good pratice and I have found an excellant guide on debian
administration site.
The one thing I am little unsure on is sshd, is it just apt-get install
sshd? I remember last time at the Lug when the server was initially
installed they restriced access to anybody logging in, any tips
appreciated on this one.
Thanks for taking the time to read this rather long e-mail.
