All,
A few days back, my wireless access point died. I decided to build
this functionality into my main router/gateway machine using a simple
and supported PCI PCMCIA controller. Unfortunately, the 'supported'
part holds for i386, but not for alpha (which my machine happens to
be).
I added the following to my kernel config :
----------------------------------------------------------------------
# PCI PCMCIA controllers
pcic* at pci? dev? function ?
# PCMCIA bus support
pcmcia* at pcic? controller ? socket ?
# Wireless network card
wi* at pcmcia? function ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course, this does not work :
[weerd@alfalfa] $ config ALFALFA
ALWILFA:53: pcic*: unknown device `pcic'
ALWILFA:56: pcmcia*: unknown device `pcmcia'
ALWILFA:202: wi* at pcmcia?: `pcmcia' unknown
*** Stop.
As pcmcia is supported on both i386, macppc and sparc64 I was hoping
this was merely a 'never tested' issue. It looks like I'm out of luck,
but I'm asking anyway...
Can pcmcia be made to work without too much hassle on the alpha ?
(with 'too much hassle' being anything that involves me writing kernel
code) Am I completely insane or just somewhat in need of a good whack
with a cluestick ?
Cheers,
Paul 'WEiRD' de Weerd
PS: Googling turned up the following :
NetBSD appears to support this configuration :
This debian thread indicates the same for that OS :
