3db & 5.5db are pretty low on the gain, might want to look at something around an 8db. A 12db omni would provide even greater distance, but only cover a very thin plane height wise (if your above or below the antenna, no signal). http://www.etherdesigns.com/ has cantenna's for about $30 that provide much better gain than Pringles (which aren't all that great).

Consumer grade equipment may have 2 antennas, but they just check both, pick the one with the best signal, and ignore the other antenna.

For the most part splash screens are the same as captive portals I believe. Captive portals just have the option of forcing a logon.

I'm pretty sure LMR beats out most RG stuff in the same league. You can find LMR specs at http://www.timesmicrowave.com/telecom/, not sure for RG specs offhand.

Subject: DxNode requires Unix server? Free BW to Masses and directional and omni antenna combo?

Greetings:

I purchased the $30, 5.5 dBi omni Linksys (they also have D-Link style) antennas at Radio Shack.  Whereas Vetco wanted $35 for a 3 dBi panel and once adding interfacing connectors I figured total price of about $50.

Hopefully that is enough gain for a CxNode to see my DxNode?

I have read through the material on the website, Getting Started, etc.
Am I correct in understanding that my installation is only a DxNode
(3522 Burke Ave. N.) and I have to jump up to a server based configuration to gain CxNode status?

Directional Omni combo - is it possible to use a pringles can antenna on one of the two Linksys AP antenna connections for connecting to a BxNode and the other Linksys 5.5. dBi antenna connection for my LAN/DxNode?

Other than potentially having my 256 kbps DSL slowed, what is the down side of me leaving my access wide open, "providing free BW to the Masses"?

There was mention of Splash screens.  Are these the same as a captive portal?  Is that a good method to allow limited access vs. having to issue an exclusive password access?

Note: I was also at Vetco yesterday and they do have the RP-TNC connectors ($10) for RG8 or RG58 cable.  The RG8 is such stiff cable that not until I mount my AP, the RG8 would wag my AP.  Anyone know how loss of RG8 compares with LMR400?
