Here's some info from the "madwifi" SourceForge project owner. It looks
like it's the real deal. Now I just might have to go buy a card or three.

no upset.
we found it humorous on several levels.

good point.
the press release people were all at 802.11 Planet last week.
there will be a press release "soon" and probably something on atheros.com.
Atheros supports the project, but that's not exactly the same as an
officially supported product.
Those of us who are Linux users and committed to open source will
maintain and enhance
the software. We also hope it will acquire a life of its own.

yes. in the short term we expect to add support for the crypto protocols,
improve performance and compatibility, support the new chips that are
coming out, etc.
That is low-level hardware dependent stuff, most of it. We're hoping
that doing such
things as using the driver in access points, mesh networking, moving the
driver
the the 2.6 kernels will be done by the community.

it works with all the chips Atheros has produced including the 1st gen chips
that are no longer manufactured.

Proxim, D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, others.
If its a retail 802.11a/b/g card, then it has Atheros chips in it.... at
least for the moment that is true.

you bet.
If you find we missed something, let us know or supply a patch or something.

if you mean does it operate normally with all the protocol stacks, yes.
if you meant something else, then I'm not sure what the question meant.
I'm using it now at home on a Red Hat distro with Mozilla tunneled over ssh
to the internal network at atheros.

Re: [picoIPO] (news) BBC - UN urges wi-fi for all

Sounds good. You do the marketing. I'll provide the capital and the corporate structure. We should start with a smallish project, say a network with between 10 and 100 nodes that saturates a city. We'll need to engineer and install the nodes, build a NOC, and hire and train local staff to run the NOC and maintain the nodes. Let me know when you have established contact with Mr. Annan and when and where our 1st meeting will be. Re: [picoIPO] (news) BBC - UN urges wi-fi for all

The UN websites include the original story http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=7527&Cr=information&Cr1=technology The ICT is at http://www.unicttaskforce.org/index.asp and its general email  address is UN programs are very bureaucratic and process driven.  I confess to having very little patience for bullshit.  But my 25 years of experience in accounting, provides me with some degree of abilities when the need arises. This program http://www.unicttaskforce.org/about/principal.asp apparently has already sorted out its goals and directions into six WGs. Our baby is the "Low Cost Connectivity Access" WG at http://unicttaskforce.org/groups/members/public.asp?cod_tema_menu=34 There is a document stash and a subscription signup form. ICT's Task Force Vice-Chairman Talal Abu-Ghazaleh was mentioned in the June 26-27 conference in New York.  He is a prominent figure. http://www.tagi.com/Chairman.htm  and you will have no problem getting a proposal to him. http://www.unicttaskforce.org/wifi/ is the homepage of the WiFi initiative. Let me know if you are serious about this and we can talk about the form and content of our first effort to contact this UN process.   Also you will need to inform me how I would be compensated or employed since you are the service provider, performing needed services while I am an intermediary or bureaucrat, Todd Boyle CPA 9745-128th Ave NE, Kirkland WA 98033  425-827-3107  http://www.ledgerism.net At 01:14 PM 6/28/2003, Bob Meizlik wrote: Sounds good. Fwd: [picoIPO] (news) BBC - UN urges wi-fi for all

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3025734.stm BBC News, 27 June 2003; UN urges wi-fi for all Wireless networks could help poorer regions catch up with the pace of technology change, says the UN. But many countries will need help to deploy and make the best use of wi-fi, says UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at a technology conference on Thursday. Seattle Wireless and other communities *have* the answers Kofi Annan is looking for, and should contact the UN and inquire about contracts, for money. I'm highly confident that the people who have been so visible, in SF, Portland and Seattle building these networks for their communities will be very credible and would be preferred over the usual telecom vendors in winning such contracts. Calling all hams ( radio that is )

I know there are a lot of Ham operators on the list, would you mind emailing me off list. I have a microwave RF idea but it has nothing to do with wireless networking so I don't want to clog up inboxes with off topic discussion. Thanks in advance. -Scott ric0123@xxxxxxxxxxx _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8.
