You could be right. On the other hand, according to www.skype.com, their free
Internet telephony software has been downloaded more than 101 million times.
Sometimes folks will install new software, if it delivers real benefits.

Some people might not want to run the cuwin software on their laptop, but
other people might to receive the mutual benefits of a network with expanded
coverage.

The possibility of end users running the cuwin software on their laptops
raises another question. With a greatly increased number of nodes, would
cuwin be able to determine the shortest path through the network? If there
are too many hops, the latency in transmission might cripple realtime
applications such as VOIP.

Re: [CUWiN] Loading CUWin Image to Soekris 4526 SMB

On Mon, 18 Apr 2005, jbrink@xxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: Hello, I'm sure that this has been asked before, but is there a detailed "How To" document to transfer the cuwin image to a Soekris 4526 board with 64 MB Ram and 64 MB of CF. I've got the board to boot via PXEboot using a kernel i found via google, but can't seem to transfer the image to CF. Including trying to mount nfs shares. Does anyone have a compiled image that will get me started ? There's a number of ways to do it. I've been using the recipe found here: http://metrix.net/support/pxeboot/ You have to have to set up your IP address, DHCP, and TFTP as shown. Then you run an http server (I use thttp) to serve the raw image. The 4526 will PXE boot then wget the raw image from the webserver and reboot without intervention, other than <Ctrl>-P and 'boot f0' from the system BIOS to PXE boot. The 0.5.5 image here should work (need to gunzip first for the process above): http://www.cuwireless.net/downloads/release-0.5.5.html#bin-net4526 Aside: Are there enough potential testers to justify a "nightly" binary release of the trunk? bill -- Bill Comisky bcomisky@xxxxxxxxx _______________________________________________ CU-Wireless mailing list CU-Wireless@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://lists.chambana.net/cgi-bin/listinfo/cu-wireless Project Page: http://cuwireless.ucimc.org

Jim, You can be sure that net80211 will be updated. I have spent many hours on it already. I got it to the point where it would compile before I put it aside a few weeks ago. Testing will be a treat, I'm sure.... CUWiN is swamped with work for our deliverables; it will not be until mid-May that I can revisit net80211. > I think its a mistake to require people to load new software on their > laptops, even if it improves the situation. > Folks won't do it. If they achieve 95% coverage in Philly, then all the 802.11 STAs with braindead roaming implementations may get Seriously Confused. The CUWiN software is small enough that it could be ported to a variety of end-user devices. We're currently working to crossbuild on Linux.
