Subject: Re: SUN JRE (Java) as package for TS2

Hej Lars

Well, basically I agree that java/jre is a sexy idea. I was wildly excited
when java was introduced some years ago - "this is going to be the
future".

The fact is that today java has very little influence. It is oversized and
underperforming. And it isn't open source. TS can live with external
packages as ICA and Flash being closed source, but having a "java-TS" with
the core component not being open source is unacceptable. I'm aware that
SUN is thinking about opening java, but SUN thinks a lot and does little.

Concerning hardware: Yes, if you go out to buy new TS hardware, java will
run without problems (I just has a real hard time to get 128 MB DDR
sticks for new TS clients (Epia M-6000). 256 was the normal minimum!).
However, last time I suggested a 400 MHz P-II as design target for TS-3.0
(due in a year or so) I was almost expelled from the project by the
users :-)

TS needs to be able to run on very modest hardware. And having to rely on
java for it's core system simply doesn't add up, IMHO.
