OpenVPN will work fine without icmp. The recommended ping is just to check 
the connectivity and ease trouble-shooting.

OpenVPN uses UDP for its transport as default, so if you can only use TCP 
you need to use the "--proto tcp-server" and "--proto tcp-client" options.
