Creating v3 users

I'm setting up snmpd and want to use snmpv3.

Following the instructions in the FAQ, I placed this command in my
snmpd.conf:

createUser (username) MD5 (authphrase) DES

However, when I start up snmpd, I get this error in /var/log/messages:

Jan 26 21:19:14 localhost ucd-snmp[1248]: /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf: line
48: Error: Error generating auth key from pass phrase.
Jan 26 21:19:14 localhost ucd-snmp[1248]: ucd-snmp: 1 error(s) in
config file(s)

I've searched the list archives for this error, but I can't find any
reference to it.

Any help would be appreciated.
