At one point I thought there was a gleam of sanity glowing, and all the application config and binaries were going to reside in /opt, but that didn't happen. My shared magic profile looks in about a dozen places to find things to put in the PATH, MANPATH, etc. The good thing is that it works and will drop in for bash or ksh, on Linux, AIX or Solaris. My tiny blow for sanity. I do put stuff in /opt, and /usr local, and in the office /common from the fileserver.
