RE: Problems resolving - no answer section?: msg#00662

network.dns.bind.user

Subject: RE: Problems resolving - no answer section?

To test, I did an ndc restart and tried the query again. =20

The first time, it worked. I see it query pubchq1.stpaul.com and get a =
reply with no answer section. It then sends a query to =
chqpubdd1.stpaul.com and gets a response with only an answer section.

The second time, it also worked, but dig returned the answer, =
authoritative, and additional sections from its cached data. In between =
the two digs, I captured the nameserver querying pubchq1.stpaul.com for =
AAAA and A6 records of both nameservers. =20

The last time, I saw the usual failure. In the trace it got a similar =
reply to the first, but then never followed up with the other =
nameservers.

This is starting to imply that my nameservers get confused and don't =
function correctly. Or am I missing something???

Subject: Problems resolving - no answer section?

Hi. We're running BIND 8.3.4 on Solaris.

We're having problems consistently resolving www9.stpaul.com.

Quite frequently, we can't resolve it. Here is an example:

; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> +rec www9.stpaul.com a=3D20
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; res_nsend to server default -- 162.131.23.103: Connection timed out

In these cases, I've captured the response coming back from =3D
pubwood1.stpaul.com or pubchq1.stpaul.com and it will not have an answer =
=3D
section:

Is this just a referral and at this point, my nameservers should be =3D
querying chqpubdd1.stpaul.com or woodpubdd1.stpaul.com for =3D
www9.stpaul.com? They don't, though, so I'm starting to believe that =
=3D
the response could be bogus.=3D20

I'm also confused, because sometimes it works, and when it does, I'll =
=3D
capture a response that only has the answer section. Although we get =
=3D
the answer, this seems to be bogus as well.

I'm trying to figure out if I have a problem, or if the stpaul.com =3D
nameservers have a problem, so any help or insight would be greatly =3D
appreciated.

Thanks!
