They all implement the standard DNS protocol, so either way works.

BIND 8 implements some new, optional features that BIND 4 didn't, and
enables some of them by default, so you may need to tweak some options to
prevent problems.  For instance, see the "transfer-format" option in the
BIND 8 named.conf file.
