One thing that we did not discuss in irc channel is the open file limit. I can imagine that it
has a bad effect on the os's caching if the files get often opened and closed because the
torrent(s) have to many files. (i.e. 40 isn't much for scanlations)

I don't think the OS' cache is flushed just because the file is closed. At least my experience on windows XP and OSX 10.4 suggests that there is no measurable speed difference between opening and closing the file for each piece that is read, or just leaving the file open. Except when you have (crappy?) anti virus software that hooks on file close and scans the file's content.
