fork to background?

Hi,

Have read and searched, but found no satisfactory response to this. 
I compiled BT from source, and want to SSH to my machine to start 
btdownloadheadless.py, and leave it running after I log out (I pipe 
output to a log file).

After I start it, if I do ANYTHING it exits (kills process). This is 
so annoying, I have tried all the usual tricks, no go. I know 
nothing about Python, so if there is a specific py command I need, 
please help me out.

If I can get it going, we have another 24/7 dedicated uploader 
here...

Using Mandrake 9.1, on non-root user.
