If python 2.1.1 is working as specified in the documentation, this
statement should not cause this error.  I can also see no bugs fixed
in the release notes related to this problem.  I suspect something is
wrong with the curses installation on this system (this is a lame
excuse.  I really don't know what is wrong, and this is a huge guess)
