Thanks for all the responses!  I guess the moral of the story is "always 
read the release docs, EVEN when you know what you're doing".  Oddly, 
this didn't happen on the first box I upgraded, but that was a very 
minimal upgrade (kernel + base) and it boots to X so maybe it is different.
