After a couple of listens I think the Painkiller is
pretty good -- the band sounds tight and occasionally
genuinely inspired, though I could really do without
Patton's pointless yelling and fairly unimaginative
use of his delay unit. He sounds like a braindead
Gibby Haynes, but ultimately not half as interesting
even as that. I can't understand why anyone rates
Patton in the first place, but maybe that's just me.
Drake is his usual, highly rhythmically-aware self;
Zorn balances his customary screeching with some cool
drones and more lyrical stuff, and Las does what Las
does, mixing some nice funk runs with his typically
more distorted noise-rock style. Overall, it reminds
me most of Buck Jam Tonic with rawer production and
some idiot yelling over the top of it.

New Painkiller and still unreleased Las projects

Painkiller 50th birthday set is excellent. You're right, it's not Painkillerish, but really worth getting it. Hamid Drake is awesome, but it's not a scoop I think. This quartet works like a duet, with Bill & Hamid in the rhythmic section, playing raw and groovy, and Zorn and Patton adding their abrasive vocals & sax sounds. Funky, Funny, Groovy, Agressive, Weird, An excellent quartet. One of my fav "improvised" Laswell record for sure. My best Laswell record of the year (I know, I know, this year is for now very quiet). Get it now ! Also : I've been lucky enough to listen, last week, the new Praxis record as well as the Herbie Hancock remix project. Don't try to send me an e-mail to ask to send you a CDR, I don't have theses CD, I just had the luck to LISTEN them one time, that's all. Both are excellent. The HH remixes are very varied, from single "cleaning" (like Miles Davis Panthalassa) to heavy DnB remixes. The bulk of tracks are from the Laswell-Hancock "trilogy", but not all (some are from Herbie's pre-Headhunters period). Laswell is (re) playing bass on some tracks (it's a pure delight hearing him playing some basslines of the Future Shock LP again) and I think (not sure) that Wayne Shorter is featured on one track. There is also the "Rockit" that you can find in the Scratch soundtrack, perhaps in a slightly different version. The new Praxis is extremely HEAVY !!! Nothing to hear with the previous records, very speed-metal oriented, with interesting P.funk and hardcore-ragga influences. Last track is an instrumental dub, more in the Metatron vein. The line up should be the classic Praxis trio, plus Bernie, Disk and Ramellzee on some tracks. The song with the singer of System of a Down is incredible. I didn't hear the track with Iggy Pop because I think that what I've heard was the "1.0" version of the project. A terrific record for sure. What a pity these records are still unreleased : ( doomride666 a écrit : >Jesus,it's amazing what can happen around here after not checking in >for a week...our small tribe is fractured...hehe...I guess I can >understand everyone's angle...personally,I like Dub Gabriel's music >and think he is a good dude...not bothered at all by his prescence on >the board... > >On a sidenote,anyone have any thoughts about the Painkiller 50th >birthday thingy???I've heard that it is not very Painkillerish...will >be very interested to hear Hamid Drake in this context,so I guess I >will have to purchase that one next....also,did the Street Fighter >Alpha dvd get pushed back?and did we ever find out if this was new or >recycled music??? > > ------------------------ Yahoo! Re: Re:New Painkiller

...that's exactly what I think about it. The record would be really great without Patton.
