S.E.M. Ensemble returns to its roots, presenting music for small groups and
soloists at Tonic. These days, S.E.M. appears most frequently as The Orchestra
of the S.E.M. Ensemble, with composer and flutist Petr Kotik as conductor. At
Tonic, Kotik performs with a small group of S.E.M. core musicians. The works
by Kotik and Wolff were composed for SEM and this version of Ryoanji was
created by Cage for SEM performances in Europe in 1987.

For over 30 years, S.E.M. Ensemble has performed music that is rarely heard
elsewhere. In 1992 this chamber music group expanded to become The Orchestra of
the S.E.M. Ensemble, debuting as an 87-piece ensemble in Carnegie Hall.
S.E.M. Ensemble has toured internationally since its inception. Recently,
S.E.M.
Ensemble has been participating in a project called Music in Space -
Compositions for 3 Orchestras, performing concerts in Prague, Warsaw, Ostrava
and Berlin,
with music by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Martin Smolka, Earle Brown, Alvin
Lucier, Christian Wolff and Petr Kotik.
