Actually I found a real reason to use FLAC that would convince me.

The SQ3 does not natively support WMA lossless. SO the Slimserver
transcodes to another format (probably to wav) on the fly. When it does
this it disables the ability to fast forward within a track on the
squeezebox.

FLAC is the only compressed lossless format with tagging that
SqueezeBox supports natively.
