Subject: Re: Tagging issues between Itunes and SlimserverDB's

Another observation: It isn't easy taking a library in Flac that's
tagged optimally for SlimServer and transcoding it to MP3 to be used in
other applications and devices. Lots of issues with tags.

I spent part of the weekend working on my script to transcode my Flac
library to MP3 to be used on my iPod Nano. The problem is mostly with
multiple tags. Say I have a Flac track tagged:

ARTIST=Anita O'Day
ARTIST=Gene Krupa

My choices to tag this in id3v2 for an MP3 are pretty much:

Anita O'Day & Gene Krupa
Anita O'Day
Gene Krupa
Anita O'Day;Gene Krupa

And if I'm running a script how do I programatically choose? The first
is probably the best choice, but I won't get the same grouping that I
expect in SlimServer - it essentially creates a new artist (like Simon
& Garfunkel) where one hadn't existed before.

That same track is tagged with multiple genres:

GENRE=Jazz
GENRE=Vocal
GENRE=Big Band

What the heck do you do with that? For Mp3 you can either combine them
to create a new genre:

Big Band & Jazz & Vocal

Or select one at random, or perhaps you define a genre hierarchy and
select the most 'general' - in this case it would probably be Jazz.

Then there's the issue of what to do with ALBUMARTIST tags. If I have
a track tagged:

ALBUMARTIST=Frank Sinatra
ARTIST=Luther Vandross
ARTIST=Frank Sinatra

then I probably want to use ALBUMARTIST as ARTIST and throw out the
ARIST info altogether.
