Hmm, based on your last edit, I'm not sure if you solved this or not.

But today, for the first time ever, I got an "Error: CD not in
database".

It wasn't a terribly obscure CD either.

Apparently freedb may be shut down due to infighting?  So I thought it
may have finally bought the farm.
