GR-50 won't talk to PC

I've got a Roland GK2/GR-50 as a MIDI source, and cables that connect from 
the back of the Roland into the serial port. 

MIDI in and out cables are properly connected. Serial port works. MIDI is 
turned on in BIOS. The MPU-401 driver is enabled. Using Finale to record 
(or attempt to), I get no MIDI input. Finale will play MIDI *unless* I 
select MPU-401 as the MIDI device. Finale's MIDI Setup lists only MPU-41 
as an input device.

Running the DirectX troubleshooter (DXDiag), I see that the Microsoft 
Synthesizer (software) is the default port. MPU-401 *is* recognized, but 
when I click Test DirectMusic using either MPU-401 or MPU-401 [emulated] 
as the port, I get nothing. (Other options are C-Media Wave device, 
Microsoft MIDI Mapper, and Microsoft GS Wavetable GS Synth - all those 
work.) MPU-401 is listed as input and output, "Kernel Mode" is Yes (so is 
C-Media Wave Device) but "Supports DLS" is No.
