With the daisy chain approch you will have to get into muting channels
on the individual synths. As MIDI guitar tends to eat channels if
you use 6 strings per channel mode (not always necessary but essential
if your parts are polyphonic and use pitch bend) then this will
work for you but not recommended. For input you will either need a
merger or a patchbay or to repatch the MIDI in as needed.

How many extra ports you but depends I guess on your budget and if
you intend to expand your MIDI module collection further.

FWIW, I have most ports of my Unitor8 hooked up and things are
so much cleaner with a single device per port.

Certainly a two in 2 out device sounds suffucuent for your current
needs.
