there are a BUNCH of differences, a few of the most obvious are

most modules are capable of using at least 4 sound elements in creating a
patch, the GR's use 2

multi-timbrality/polyphany, the GR's can't be used to play many sounds at
once, modules can

available sample ROM, VERY limited in the GR's and not upgradable
the avg late model module has 5-10 times the sample ROM and plenty of
upgrade choices

RAM, many modules have RAM for custom samples

proccesing power, filters efx, etc

UI, the GR's don't have the best user interface for working deeply in sound
creation, most modules are better although this is a sticky issue

my dream rig would be a hi end roland(or for that matter other) synth module
that has the GR pitch to midi conversion on a plug in card, I'm sure theres
a reason why they don't do this but boy it seems like an ideal solution

peace, steve

Re: Re: proteus 2000 synth module

Sure, the 2020 would be great too and if found on e-bay you can get them for a lot less. Shopping around online and getting a store out of state where no salestax is the way to go. Never used a 2020 first hand but sure it is a good unit. I do have an XV3080 that I am very happy with and have the world, latin and expantion boards in it. Has anyone used the roland JV expantion card for "sound effects." would be very interested to see what it has on it. ------------------------ Yahoo! RE: synth module?

[] From: toby lustig [mailto:toby37@xxxxxxxxxxx] [] [] Please excuse the following which is dripping with [] ignorance, but what [] is the difference between a synth (such as the gr-30 or 33) [] and a synth [] module (like the Roland xv3080)?? I have read about the [] modules, but [] cannot tell how they augment an existing setup... More basically: * A synth: whether being a full sized synth with a keyboard, or being a module driven from another controller via MIDI, such as a separate keyboard or a guitar controller (which could be either of the following two items). * A pitch-to-MIDI device: a device that takes input from a hex pickup (the sort of pickup required for both the Axon and Roland products) and converts the signal to MIDI. Such a device could send MIDI notes to the synth described above. * A "guitar synth" (such as the GR33 or the Axon AX100SB*): this is a device that has both the pitch-to-MIDI converter *and* a synth in it. What's more, they will also send MIDI info externally so that you can play an external synth (either a module or full sized with keyboard, as long as it has MIDI inputs jacks). This 'all in one' package is the simplest and easiest to use, but is also powerful, since it will allow you to play other modules. The reasons that you would want anything other than an 'all in one' guitar synth are a) you're not satisfied with the sounds in the guitar synth and b) you want something that has either better tracking and more options to edit (which is why some people get the Axon AX100 non-SB*). However, it's more complex to operate (not a problem for some) and the GR33 performs pretty well. Chris * SB = 'sound board', meaning that you can get the Axon with or without the internal synth component. Roland used to make a synth-less pitch to MIDI device too, called the GI-10.
