If the messages that are in the junk folder were already flagged as junk
or moved there as junk then you don't have to run the controls as that
means the filter is working and trained for those types of messages.

and the "teaching a child to talk" analogy is what
I had expected, ie: repeat several times.
Maybe my error is in selecting the messages to run
the junk mail controls on. Parish assumed that I
was running the JMC on the junk folder. I have not.
My procedure has been to manually move all
messages that JMC flags to the junk folder, then
manually flag spam that the JMC missed. Then I
manually move those to the junk folder, select ALL
in the junk folder, then "mark selected messages
as junk"
I have the JMC controls set to move the detected
junk mail to the junk folder which I created, but
they don't get moved. I gather that running the
JMC on the junk folder is somehow different from
selecting all the messages in the junk folder , or
is it???
This is why I would like to have the text for
operating the JMC in the online help files. Or,
failing that, have someone knowlegeble teach me
what I am doing incorrectly.... (Parish???)
Thanks!

I just went to my junk folder, edited it and
assured that everything in it was (is) unwanted,
and flagged all the messages with the trashcan
icon. Then I selected "run filters on selected
folder" from the tools menu.
Wonder is that will make any difference!

Ok, one more time for clarity because this is still unclear to me.
Assuming I've never before used or setup junk mail controls. I enable
the Junk Mail Controls. Then,
1. I get one (or more) junk mails in my Inbox.
2. I highlight the messages, click the Junk button, the little Junk
icon appears next to the messages.
3. I then click Tools -- Run Junk mail controls on selected messages.
4. The Junk icon on some of the messages toggles off. What the hell
does that signify?
5. I select a bunch of good messages and do Tools -- Mark selected as
NOT Junk to train the filter.
6. Next day I fire up Mozilla and do the same thing.
I get that the filter must be trained. What puzzles (and alarms me) is
having messages I explicitly mark as Junk having the Junk icon turned
off when I Run Junk Mail Controls. This seems contradictory, or at
best, confusing behavior. Is there any clear and precise documentation
by the person(s) who wrote this function that explains how to use it?
