clearing setting for style.display

Hi

If i set a the style.display to, say, "none", how can i clear this
later?

What I am trying to do is to toggle whether an HTML element is visible
or not. I could save the previous value when I set to "none", and then
re-apply it, but I'd rather remove the display attribute (effectively
not setting it).

In IE, there is style.removeAttribute that does this, but this isn't
part of the DOM.
