The download page at http://www.rogerbinns.com/apsw.html#Download points
right back at the bitpim page, where the latest version shown has only:

Release Notes apsw-3.2.2-r1 [show only this release] 2005-07-08 00:59
Download apsw-3.2.2-r1.win32-py2.3.exe
290393 51 i386 .exe (32-bit Windows)
Download apsw-3.2.2-r1.win32-py2.4.exe
294508 78 i386 .exe (32-bit Windows)
Download apsw-3.2.2-r1.zip

i.e. MS-Windows executables and an MS-Windows "zip" file. Nothing that
says anything about source and nothing in a non-proprietary format.

You neglected to include the text for the last file where it very clearly
says "Any Source .zip"

zip is not restricted to Windows. You'll find that Linux, Mac, Solaris and
most other operating systems come with it. It is the single most widely
supported archive format.

The apsw document then shows how to build APSW.

The particular problem traces to /usr/lib/bitpim-0.7.33/libwx_gtk2ud-2.6.so.0
which surely isn't python code. Nor is it built as part of the standard
wx-python installation ,

Err, it is exactly part of wxPython.

Moreover, there evidently needs to be some
sort of configuration for where things get installed;

Which bit of "running from source" means something has to be installed?

"/usr/lib/bitpim-0.7.33" isn't a standard directory.

Correct. It is where BitPim is installed if you use the binary
packager on Linux.

Redhat 9 currently provides the most binary compatibility with all the versions of Linux out there

Evidently not,

Extrapolating from a sample of one (yourself) doesn't make evidence.
If there is another distro and version to build that that will
result in greater binary compatibility and support, then I'd be
happy to do so. However I'd want actual evidence that is the case
rather than speculation.

Historically I never cared about Suse either. Their distro was
not freely downloadable and the installer was not free software.
They finally fixed that at the time of the Novell acquisition.

If you or someone else wants to package up and maintain BitPim
on Suse that is fine and I will help with that. However I won't
do it all myself.

If you feel the documentation is incomplete or misleading, then
supply some alternate text that improves it.

Roger
