BitPim rpms > 0.7.16 don't work on SuSE Linux

rpm -Uhv installs with no warnings or errors, but on startup
the following appears on the console:

0.7.16 works reasonably, though sometimes the transfer rates are
awful (tens of bytes/sec) with excessive CPU usage, and other times
not too bad (a few kilobytes/sec).
