Uh, call me clueless, but why would an MP3 play on a phone when you have to
change the extension to .mid? Is this a Bitpim workaround? Or people
being clueless about the diference between midis and MP3's?

I am using Audacity, with LAME as the encoder so that I can export
.mp3 files. However, I've noticed that LAME does not encode all files
correctly, resulting in .mp3 files that are very short (- "ends up
about 20k " -) and have only a little bit of static in them. Using
LAME from the command line, I've realized my own issue has to do with
the files I'm starting with, and that it does not like the type of
encoding used to create the source .wav.
If you .mp3 is that small, though, be certain that it will play on the
computer first, before changing the extension to .mid.
Also, be sure and reboot your phone afterward, mine will see the files
without a reboot, but won't play them until afterward.

itunes convert it to 16 kHz, 24 kbps, mono file (ends up about 20k) -
changed the .mp3 to .mid and imported into bitpim. It uploads to the
phone fine, but when I try to play it on the phone it is silent. I am
sooo close. Can someone please help? The only thing I notice is that in
itunes settings it says "optimized for velocity engine" and I can't see
to turn that off, could this be the problem?

Yes, it's a Bitpim workaround. Bitpim seems to only accept files ending

Try removing the .mp3 portion - it may be screwing up things. Just
rename the file to acdc-tnt.mid
