Thanks.  I discovered vim which seems preferable to vi anyway. 
Instead of trying to fix vi I'm giving vim a try as my default editor.
 Has anyone had any stability issues with the ipkg version (6.3) of
vim, like the issues that affected the busybox version of vi?
