I know this is an old email I'm replying to, but...

This problem should now be fixed. No unslung package should now require
libiconv. If you find a package that does, please report it as a bug.

If you find a package that appears to be broken due to missing character
encoding conversion support, try installing the gconv-modules package.
If that doesn't help, or if the package is non-functional without gconv-
modules, and should depend on it, you can report that as a bug too.
