It would of course be better if cvs could pass -R down
to the client (maybe via the rsh/ssh protocol, not the
cvs protocol - would leave out p-/kserver connections,
but worth the effort)

I thought so, yes.
In the meanwhile, I hacked up nroff to be good enough,
used ja-groff until absolutely no C++ was available any
more, wrote a wrapper around nroff to pass 8-bit chars
(works only with col -b afterwards though) and got the
licence of ditroff clarified.

It's about as necessary as gnu groff. Legacy stuff
we ought to provide. Besides, you're good doing that.

... and even if we do use emacs we don't need a barely functional
console only version in base. I can inflict the pain of emacs on
myself through ports. Good riddance mg.
