I'm trying to connect via nntps to the gmane secure nntp server at 
nttps://snews.gmane.org which is what I have my
$nntp_host variable set to.

I think gmane is pretty up to date.  Thing is, it used to work for me just 
fine.  Are you able to successfully connect
to them?
