They don't have to be unreliable (and usually aren't).

Recommended by whom? By you and me and Dan Bernstein? Sure.
By the muttng manual? Maybe, but I didn't find it.
By any major Linux distribution or Unix vendor? I don't think so.
AFAIK they are all set up deliver to /var/(spool/)mail by default. And
muttng includes a set[ug]id muttng_dotlock program to deal with this
situation.
