I'd have to to say the best practice of all is not to do it. If possible, use
osmething like shared folders instead.

How the list is structured is really only relevant when it comes to list
maintenance. Expansion is pretty much the same problem either way.

As long as the directory server is configured so that a result this large can
be returned, there's really no problem doing this as long as you set the
LDAP_USE_ASYNC MTA option to use handle the list expansion asynchronously.
(Synchronous operation causes excessive memory fragmentation in the LDAP client
library.)
