did you perhaps forget the command tag? If you want to login to an imap
server with the account test@xxxxxxxx with pw test, do this:

a login test@xxxxxxxx test

the 'a' is the command tag. You can use any other tag you like. You omit 
the tag, the 'login' part of you command is seen as the tag, 
'test@xxxxxxxx' is seen as the command, and 'test' as the command argument.
