Problem sending mail via SMTP and sendmail

I am attempting to figure out which (if any) email program is going to
replace mutt (as I see the need to simplify my life ;).  Right now, I'm
trying cone and alpine, but am having a problem sending mail using cone.

Settings...
      Outgoing SMTP Server: mx.weller-fahy.com:587/novalidate-cert
    SMTP userid (optional): dave
                            [ ] Don't send SMTP password in clear text
                            [ ] Send mail via main acct (if available)
                            [X] Use SMTP tunneled over SSL

Server software...
    qmail-smtpd using SMTP AUTH (0.5.8)
        <http://www.fehcom.de/qmail/smtpauth.html#PATCHES>
    SSL implemented using sslsvd
        <http://smarden.org/ipsvd/sslsvd.8.html>

Sending works with msmtp/ssmtp and alpine 0.99999/mutt HEAD.

The error message I get when attempting to send mail is:

After getting that error message, I attempted to use cone's built in
detection of 'sendmail', and ended up getting a '-bs unsupported' error
message.

After *that* I downloaded the source tarball (0.74, previously I was
using the ubuntu package which is 0.72), and tried changing the -bs
option (to a blank).  That resulted in the following error message.

Trying to set the 'auto_from' setting in the .msmtprc simply caused an
error about no recipients.  So, at this point I would still like to give
cone a go, but am unsure where to go from here to troubleshoot.  Getting
the local sendmail to work would be sufficient, but I'll take either
that or being able to send over SMTP via SSL.

So, any suggestions on how to fix sending mail with one of the
relay-only MTAs above (I'd prefer msmtp)?

If not, any suggestions to fix the problem sending mail via SMTP over
SSL with the settings above?
